Basics of Bookkeeping for Freelancers

TBA

$60

Do you know the difference between business expenses and assets? Between 100% deductible meals and 50% deductible meals? Whether taking the Standard Deduction means you can’t report business expenses? Do you have a system for logging and keeping track of your purchases and income, and sorting them according to business and person expenses? If not, you might be overpaying hundreds or thousands of dollars a year in taxes, and missing out on important insight into your freelance business.

Bookkeeping for Freelancers will explain the basics of bookkeeping, and offer practical advice for freelance journalists, designers, writers, and other people who sell their creative work. Jesse Dukes is NOT a tax advisor or accountant, and the course will not offer advice on tax preparation. Instead, we will discuss what information you need to save and organize for an accountant, so they can ensure you pay the taxes you owe, and only the taxes you owe.

We will discuss Quickbooks and other bookkeeping tools, some simple, some complex, and make time to answer questions and discuss different business scenarios. You will leave the course with a basic understanding of how to setup your own bookkeeping system, and practical ideas for how to get started.

Who the course is for: You are based in the US, you bill less than $150,000 a year, and have NO full time employees or inventory. You might occasionally hire a temp contractor or employee for specific projects, and you make 1099 income, or a mix of 1099 and W2 income. You primarily sell your labor, creating content, as piecework, or for a day or hourly rate.

Who the course is NOT for: You already have a functional system in place to do bookkeeping, or you have a larger business with employees or over $150,000 a year in revenue. You are looking for direct instruction on how to setup Quickbooks or another bookkeeping software client.

We will reserver two spaces as “pay as you can” on a first come, first served basis. Fill out the registration form and select the “Pay as you can” option. We’ll contact you if a space is available.
